Jail House
( Rúa da Ponte. O Caramiñal. Close to the promenade ).
Both the town and the jail of O Caramiñal belonged to the jurisdiction of the noblemen from the fortress of Xunqueiras. They were said to own the privilege of “poner justicias, escribano de número, alguacil mayor, alcalde de cárcel, procuradores de causas, y anualmente elegir regidores; y... sustituir a los Jueces en sus enfermedades y ausencias”.
In the 19th century, the swift urban expansion of the industry in the area of O Areal, gulped down the walls of this in years past desolate building.
The jailhouse was built in the 18th century. The element in best condition is the main façade: with a tough appearance and curved with strong granite masonry. In the ground floor there is a door with a singular keystone structure flanked by little openings. On top, the windows have mullions, gargoyles and their cornices are interrupted by a circled front holding a splendid baroque collection of arms. Under the marquis crown it is the chalice and the Galician’s Reign host; In the barracks, the star of the Mariñas and the weapons of the Bolaño, Arias, Moscoso and Soutomaior families; in the central coat of arms, which is covered by a noble helmet, there are the reeds of the Xunqueiras.
