Santiago do Deán

( In O Castelo, close to the manor houses of Aguiar and O Couto ).
This is undoubtedly the most interesting temple in the municipality as far as artistic values are concerned. It is worthy of a parish that prospered under the support of the Canon of Compostela.
In broad outlines, it is a building of the style called Marine Gothic, matching the church of San Martiño, in Noia. In this temple live together in harmony Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It coexists of one spacious nave and a polygonal chapel placed at the head, close to the sacristy, which was added later.
The apse, dated from the 14th century, is the oldest part of the temple. It is covered by a beautiful fanlike vault which is reinforced by fine ribs resting in little columns. The great arch over the entrance shows some reliefs with the symbols of the Evangelists at the base and a Majestic Christ at the keystone. The figures of the Virgin, Saint Sebastian and the Pilgrim Saint James are good-quality ones.
The nave is divided into five sections by four lancet arches that support the roof resting over thick columns that are embbeded into the walls. In their capital there are some odd representations of the medieval bestiary. Taking advantage of this structure, up to eight devotional chapels were opened between sections.
