Santa Baia de Boiro
The church of Santa Baia de Boiro is one of the most ancient temples of the council. According to the Compostelana, the original temple was already in ruins when Xelmírez visited the archbishopric of Posmarcos de Arriba, in the 12th century, and he personally promoted the reconstruction. It was reconstructed in the Romanesque style on the Royal Way, preserving some traces of that period in the capitals of the interior of the temple. The choir, where the presbytery and the high altar are found, was finished in 1601 according to the guidelines of Gaspar de Arce, stonemason master of the Santiago Cathedral.
In the 18th century, new reforms and expansions are carried out. The purpose of them was to solve the space problems produced as a consequence of the demographic increase. As a result of these reforms, we have the today temple of Santa Baia de Boiro. This church is especially distinguished for its bell tower and its façade with a baroque balustrade. In the side chapel it can be seen the shield with the legendary siren of Sálvora, origin of the Mariño lineage, lords of these lands.
