Guadalupe Sanctuary
The chapel of Guadalupe was built in 1671 by the Bastón family over another ancient temple called Nosa Señora da Cruz. It was built in honour of the Virgin Guadalupe, whom the devoted from Rianxo called “Moreniña Rianxeira” or simply “Rianxeira”. The cartoon figure of the Virgin of Guadalupe came to Rianxo thanks to its author (a monk from the Guadalupe Monastery). The shrine of Guadalupe is considered the most valuable architectural monument of the council of Rianxo.
This religious monument has a little nave covered by a pointed vault, joined to the altarpiece’s body by a pointed arch. The entrance door has two jambs and a lintel highly decorated, a triangular front with the statue of the Virgin framed by two shields, a bulrush and a rose window.
The central nave of the church is divided in four stretches by decorated pointed arches and a false vault made of bricks, which is probably the substitute for the original wooden structure, covers it. The biggest shrine is covered by a cross vault that communicates with the ancient sacristy (founded by the Bastón family in 1675 as a funeral shrine) and the new one.
In the cornice, we find different statues of dogs. At the exterior of the choir, under an arch, there is a statue of the Virgin and the Child. The interior of the temple receives light from the rose window and from the rectangular and circular window holes opened in the thick stone walls.
